While Tesla Motors even didn’t start the production of the Tesla Model X crossover, Toyota Motor Corporation debuted the second version of the AWD RAV4 with hybrid drivetrain.
Brand-new RAV4 looks not only good, but also features a lot of really useful stuff -- Elon Musk must be feeling anxious because of that.
Are you eager to know more? Ok, let’s start from our favorite part.
Successor of 2013 Toyota RAV4 received sharper and much more aggressive styling.
The changes start at the nose where the fog-lights are recessed in the front bumper, and the design draws the eye across the lower grille. There are also reshaped lights at the rear and a redesigned lower bumper with silver skid plate trim.
Inside, the improvements include niceties like better material quality, an added USB port up front and cup holders for tall mugs.
Under the hood
The old version of the Toyota RAV4 was pretty much a Tesla’s car (2013 Toyota RAV4 is running Tesla software, it’s packing a Tesla-developed battery, and it’s powered by the same AC induction motor pulled from the Tesla), but it doesn’t work this time.
Engineers from Toyota Motor Corporation came up with their own ideas and now the car uses Toyota’s hybrid system that consists of a 4-cylinder, 2.5-liter petrol engine and eCVT transmission along with an All-Wheel-Drive System with Intelligence featuring a rear motor that operates independently from the front motor. This additional electric motor delivers instant torque to the rear wheels only when additional traction is needed, thereby automatically helping prevent wheel spin.
All-Wheel-Drive System with Intelligence adapts to the angle or condition of the road, with no driver input needed. The electronic AWD provides increased safety and stability on slippery surfaces and enables a towing capacity of 1,650 kg (3,634 lbs). Easy and safe towing is ensured thanks to Trailer Sway Control system.
Alas, Toyota Motors Corporation is keeping the exact technical specifications about the SUV a secret until closer to the fall launch, but admits the hybrid setup offers more than the 176 horsepower in the internal combustion mode, so we suppose that the numbers are similar to the fancy Lexus NX 300h.
While the styling looks awesome, Toyota is also seriously upgrading the available tech for its strong-selling SUV. Below there are some of them.
Bird’s eye view monitor
RAV4 offers a new Bird’s eye view monitor. This Toyota-first technology utilizes four cameras that are mounted on the front, side mirrors and rear of the vehicle to give the driver a panoramic view of their surroundings. The system offers drivers assistance when parallel parking, and when pulling in and out of parking spaces.
The Bird’s Eye View Monitor system also has an industry-first feature called Perimeter Scan, that gives drivers a live rotating 360-degree view of what is around the vehicle, helping them see objects that could be in the way. Cool, isn’t it?
Toyota safety sense suite
Toyota safety sense suite is the new multi-feature advanced safety package anchored by automated pre-collision braking.
TSS bundles cutting edge safety technologies including:
- forward collision warning;
- lane departure alert;
- automatic high beams;
- pedestrian pre-collision system;
- dynamic radar cruise control.
Additional convenience technologies include front and rear parking sonar, available Smart Key, and a Homelink garage door opener (standard on Limited grade). The XLE grade will have an available Scout cell phone based navigation system.
Toyota RAV4 hybrid versions
Toyota RAV4 hybrid will be offered in two premium grades: XLE and Limited. Both grades will be equipped with an Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel-Drive System with intelligence (AWD-i). Also available will be unique 17-inch alloy wheels and six exterior colors: Super White,Pearl, Blizzard Pearl, Magnetic Gray, Metallic, Classic Silver Metallic, Black Sand and a New Blue.
Production and price
Alas, the terms of production and the price have not been released, but we do have the fact that’ll definitely put a smile on your face - the 2016 Toyota RAV4 will be available to buy in all states of the US(not only in the golden state) and more likely in Europe as well.
Let’s be happy with the knowledge of that and wait for more details from Toyota Motors.
