Flush with £9m of extra government cash, Chargemaster is offering its 3kW Homecharge EVSE for free from September through March 2015. A extra £95 will nab EV owners the faster charging 7kW unit.
Savvy electric car buyers will be aware the scheme has been running for some months now, but £9m of extra government cash via the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) means Chargemaster will continue to offer free Homecharge I 3kW charging points from 1st September 2014 and 31st March 2015.
3kW Homecharge units can charge an electric vehicle in roughly 8 hours. Less patient EV owners can opt for a more powerful 7kW charger, which can do the job in roughly half the time, for a an additional fee of £95 including VAT.
The scheme requires recipients to live in England, Scotland or Wales and own or have an order a plug-in vehicle.
Homecharge will also offer free POLAR membership, which gives users access to thousands of charging points across the UK, accessible via a membership charge. The usual cost of this service is £20.
Access to free charging units will no doubt come as a huge boost to those considering electric cars. Not only do the charging units make it more convenient to charge electric cars, they also make it safer. Most electric car makers recommend consumers don't use standard 13 amp home sockets,as they aren't designed to take the constant load that Evs can draw, potentially creating a fire hazard or short circuit risks.
David Martell, Chargemaster's founder and chief executive, commented: “We are delighted to offer a free unit under the new scheme with support from the government. Chargemaster is not only subsidising the cost of the domestic unit, but also giving electric vehicle buyers greater flexibility to charge away from home with six months’ free access to the national Polar Network. Being able to see one’s electricity usage at home and in addition across the Polar network is all part of the high level of service that Chargemaster offers to support EV car buyers.”
